Family Pictures 2014

For a person who is obsessed with pictures, I am embarrassed to say that it's been over a year since we actually had our family pictures taken. The last time was for Blake's first birthday. Luckily we were able to fix that this past week! Our photographer (yes, I feel fancy saying that) was able to fit us in for a family photo shoot at Joyner Park.

Let me preface the sneak peak pictures by saying, it is incredibly difficult to do a photo shoot with an energetic two year old! Whew! Blake was all smiles and happy, but he was also non stop. We hardly got him to sit still. Luckily, Patricia's camera can handle that and she was able to grab some awesome shots! Here are a few several of my favorites so far...

Seeing these pictures just makes my heart beam.  She was able to not only get some good family pictures, but she was also able to get our personalities. Yes, we goof off. Yes, we play around. Yes, the boys usually wrestle while I sit there and sigh or laugh. That's just us!! And these pictures reflect our family life perfectly.  We can't wait to get all of the pictures back so that we can share more!!

Oh yeah, crazy story... While Patricia was positioning us for a picture on the bridge, a snake literally jumped out of the rocks and tried to bite her!! Luckily her reflexes are top notch and she leaped out of the way. She also snapped a picture of him (from far away) so that she could see what type of snake it was. Very scary!!! Needless to say we got several other bridge pictures and we quickly moved on to the next picture spot. Haha.

R&S 3 Years

Ryan and I had our 3 year anniversary yesterday!!! To be honest, it feels like we have been married a lot longer than that. But then again I think we have had a busy 3 years with moving and jobs and a little one.

I wish I could say that it was an easy year, but I think Ryan and I can both agree that this was probably our most challenging year of marriage. The newlywed feeling has worn off, and the baby excitement has now turned into a toddler challenge. Now, let me clarify, it has been another good, successful year of marriage, but lets just say our roles/responsibilities within the marriage have been challenged this year. I think that is VERY normal in any given marriage at certain times. We have each individually struggled with personal stresses in our lives and in turn we have also had to figure out new ways to support each other. Sometimes it was a hit and miss game :) In the end, we both still love love love each other and we agree that we have survived a challenging year together! Many of our other friends haven't been so lucky. So, we mark this one in the books and plan on heading into the next year of marriage as a stronger and happier couple. Lessons learned and we are stronger for that.

Over this past week we have been talking about memories and pictures and things about our wedding. I love how one day can bring back such a flood of memories. It's funny to look back and see what things stood out the most to us... Here are a few...
  • Let's get the obvious one out of the way. Yes, a tornado hit our wedding. Well, technically not our wedding but it was a few miles down the road. We did have to take cover for a bit inside. I think that is the most popular thing people say to us on our anniversary. "Remember that tornado?!?!!" Yes, we do!
  • Ryan likes to pick on me about saying our vows. He was looking lovingly into my eyes as any becoming husband should! I on the other hand, was looking over his should at the storm coming in rapidly. I might have had a panic stricken look on my face. Oops.
  • My mom reminded me of the morning of our wedding day. I stayed at my parents house that night and I woke up to see that my wedding bouquet had a flower that totally fell lopsided out of it. So the first time they saw me that morning was with my messed up flowers. LOL!
  • Oddly enough, people remember NOT coming to my wedding. A few of my close friends decided at the last minute to not come to the event because the news was saying to stay inside and take cover. Oh boy.. So it was funny to hear that people have clear memories of deciding NOT to come to our wedding. They were still there and spirit and they made sure to express their happiness for us!
  • I remember not caring about the weather. Normally you would think that a bride would be distraught over the awful weather ruining her reception, but I was the opposite. I was SO happy! It was like Ryan and I were in a little love bubble and nothing was going to mess that up. We took that tornado with stride!
  • This may seem silly, but in all of the pictures the weather made my dress look amazing! You see, I got my dress for like $200. I wasn't all about the huge wedding dress. It was simple and plain, but it was light and airy. Little did I know that the weather made my dress look Ah-Mazing! :)
  • I remember not really getting a chance to eat my BBQ. I hated that! By the time we got done with pictures (my main concern after the ceremony) the weather hit hard and he had to leave the tent. The BBQ people took cover and packed up all the food to leave. Sigh... I heard it was good though!
  • I loved that Ryan and I showed our personalities. I wore my flip-flops and he wore his skater shoes. We were pretty care free about the whole thing.
  • I cared most about the pictures. Obviously...that's just me! They turned out great and we got them done before a drop of rain hit. Crickett, our photographer, is also in our church ward now. Kind of neat!
  • Ryan was ready to leave the reception. He was having a great time, but lets face it... we were married and he was ready to start that married life! Peace out!
  • Overall, it was one crazy but wonderful day!!! We loved every second of it. Mother Nature has been present at all of our main events. I guess we just have that whirlwind romance/life. :)

We're Stuck Like Glue

I saw this little questioner thing about spouses and I thought it might be fun to put on the record for our future generations. LOL. :) Plus, it makes me thing of all the good things with just Ryan and I! So, here we go...

2 1/2 years married and 1 year dating before that.

1 dog - Roxie (I have had her since college) and 1 cat - Oliver (just adopted him a few months ago)

♥ Which situation is the hardest on you as a couple?
Hmm.. I feel like we have the same problems that any young family has. Getting settled in jobs, trying to get into the perfect little home, being new parents... the usual. LOL.

Nope

Nope

♥ Who is the smartest?

♥ Do you get flowers often?
Yes. He is always good about that! In fact I sometimes have to remind him that we can't always afford them. LOL!

♥ How do you spend the holidays?
We are currently enjoying spending them with our own little family and making our little family traditions. The traditions come from both sides of our families.

♥ Who is more jealous?
Me. I think that's just a girl thing.

♥ How long did it take to get serious?

5 minutes. Hahaha... just kidding. We did move quickly though!

♥ Who does/ did the laundry?
We both only do half of the laundry. We have no problem washing and putting it into the dryer, but we hate HATE folding!

♥ Who’s better with the computer?
He is the computer geek. Thank goodness!

♥ Who drives when you are together?
Depends on the car we take. I can't park his truck so he will drive if we take that. I like to drive my Jeep so I often drive when we take that vehicle. I think we both drive equal amounts and we both think the other one can't drive. :)

Ok, hopefully you learned more about us as a couple. We are starting to settle out of the Newlywed stage...granted we didn't have that phase long to begin with. We are quickly learning that marriage takes work and acceptance of each other - the good and the annoying. :) In the end, we love each other very much and we love this little family that we have created! Can't wait to make another year full of great memories!

One for You, One for Me

Ryan and I are complete opposites. Complete. But that's why they say opposites attract right?! So recently we have embraced each other's interest. We didn't really do this on purpose, but it just kind of fell into place. And it has been a blast!

One for You....

Ryan plays Xbox. So I tried, too. No, I did not try any of the war shooting games. I can't figure out how to move the little avatar. When I try, it looks like my avatar is chasing his own tail and shooting at the sky. I don't get it. Anyway... instead, I like to play Monopoly on Xbox!! LOL! It's really fun because it's an actual little animated board. Love it.

One for Me...

My passion is reading. It's part of my job, and part of my hobby. Ryan and I have decided to read a book together. No, he isn't reading Nicholas Sparks., but we are reading a true story called Lone Survivor. It's about a Navy SEAL who was part of a mission in which he was the only one to survive. It's pretty amazing. The movie comes out in January and we get to see that together, too.

I have loved combining and sharing out interests. Super fun. I hope things like this can "fall into place" more often. :)

Two Year Anniversary

Happy TWO YEAR ANNIVERSARY to us!! :)

I can't believe we have been married for two years... wait, maybe I can?!?! A lot has happened in two years!! The two year mark was a big deal for is. The last year has been somewhat full of challenges. I think that having the first child is difficult for couples because they are both trying to conquer something totally new...together. In addition, we decided to toss in 6 months of long distances and job changes. So many changes!!!

You know, the day we got married a tornado passed by our wedding (less than 5 miles away) and our marriage has been a whirlwind of excitement ever since! People also told us that rain on your wedding day meant good luck. If that is the case, we recieved enough good luck to last a life time!!!

Every marriage has its ups and downs, and Ryan and I are no exception. The important thing is that we have always worked it out together. When we have our down days, we push through it and there is always that up day shortly after. It's crazy to look back and see how things always work out! In the past year we have seen several friends/family have those down days conquer their relationships - some resulting in divorce. My heart breaks for them all and it makes me hold on to my marriage tighter. I know that we are no marriage experts at the 2 year mark, but I do know that we have worked to make time together and that has made all the difference!

The day of our wedding....
Pre Tornado

Post Tornado

(Check out that hail!)

And...my two year Flowers!!

We also do a traditional anniversary picture, but we were apart on our anniversary because of Ryan's training. We plan on doing the photo this weekend. Stay tuned....  :)

Canes Game

Earlier this week Ryan's National Guard Battalion mentioned that they had a limited number of Hurricanes Hockey Tickets available upon request. Free hockey game?!?!! We requested!!! ... And we got!!!!

Now, we also assumed that since they were FREE tickets that they would also be awful seats. Boy, were we wrong! They were right behind the goal! We even got 4 seats so we invited Taylor and a friend. We had such a great time!! PS- Thanks to Granny for watching Blake!

I'll Never Let Go

Ryan and I went on a really fun date today. One of the fun parts of it was going into downtown Raleigh and visiting a museum exhibit. That is one of our goals...we are trying to do more things that involve our town.

The Museum of Life and Sciences has had the Titanic Exhibit going on for the past few months. We were lucky enough to be able to visit it.

When we entered, we weren't really sure what to expect. To be honest, I though there might be Celine Dion singing in the background as the doors opened. HAHA! Instead, it basically just told he story of the Titanic and some of the people on the ship. It was neat to be able to see the different things brought up from the wreckage.

We also got a "boarding pass" as we entered. It had the name of a passenger on it with their information. I was a woman from 2nd class. Ryan was a man from third class. At the end of the tour we got to see if we lived or died. I lived thanks to the women and children being put in the lifeboats first. Ryan died. But as I told him, and as the movie says, "I will never let go!" :)

Finally...we HAD to get a funny picture! Haha.

Painting and Patience

You know that theory (I think its a theory. If it's not then it really should be) - that the closer in time that you get to something, the longer it takes. It's true!

Our family has been apart for 4 months now (with 1 visit) and we still have about 2 months left until Ryan officially joins us in NC. To put it nicely, I'm over it!!! Yes, I am sounding like a mad Army wife at the moment. I guess I am just tired of waiting. Ryan has always done a great job with long distance. He knows how to keep himself busy and make things right mentally in order to get through it. Me on the other hand tends to get 'homesick' easily and miss my other half every second of the day.

Luckily we get a visit in about 2 weeks for Thanksgiving, another visit for Christmas, and then 2 weeks after that we can say goodbye to long distance!!! Until then, I am working about every weekend on our house - getting it painted and decorated. Ryan is currently re-painting the decorating I did in the Louisiana house as he is getting ready to move out. Did I mention how much Ryan hates to paint?! Haha!

I know that being a long distance family has probably had more downs than ups for us, but the important part is knowing that we are going to make it! We are almost done AND we are for sure stronger for it. I think at this point we are all just excited about that time in January in which we are simply together.

Tarzan and Jane :)

This past weekend, Ryan and I got to go zip lining!!! Just call us Tarzan and Jane! Haha! It was seriously one of the most fun things we have done. We had to drive about 1 1/2 hours (Fayetteville, NC) to get to the place, but it was well worth it! This course has been ranked in the top 10 zip line courses! Normally there are 8 people and 2 tour guides in a group. However, we were the only ones who signed up for the 3:30 time, so we got a private tour!!!! So cool!!! Our tour guides were also possible the funniest people I have ever met. They really made the adventure fun. When I booked the trip for us, I had no idea how interesting it would be. See for yourself!

Happy Fall

It's October 1st and all I can say is - Happy Fall!!! Ryan was able to come in for the weekend and we were able to bring in the Fall season together!!! :)

We have lots more pictures to come about our long family weekend, but for now we just want to celebrate Fall!

Comic Relief

These past few weeks have been hard on the Larsen family. You know the saying, "When it rains, it pours?" Well, that has been the theme for our past few weeks. Being separated has always been hard, and we are both facing our little challenges in our individual realities. Luckily, our little family does great at being strong for each other.

So, I thought I could share some comic relief to get  away from some of the stress that we have from jobs and such. I forgot how it came up, but my family was discussing most embarrassing moments. They asked me what mine was and I just laughed. Easy! And of course it is a story about Ryan and I.

When Ryan and I FIRST met, we went to the pool. Of course we were trying to be flirty - splashing and all that cute puppy love stuff. ;) Well, Ryan decided that he was going to dunk me under the water. Isn't that like every guys goal to do to a girl in the pool?! Haha. He succeed and I went under. I came up out of the water laughing and splashing and being a good sport about it all. Ryan laughed too, until he got this somewhat funny look on his face. I was thinking that he was about to say something super romantic and kiss me...awww. But, no. Instead he said, "Um, you have some snot coming out of your nose." Yep, super attractive! Massive wet snot hanging from my nose on the first day together. Could this get any worse?!!? Luckily he wasn't too turned off and my charming personality must have recovered it because I got him in the end. ;)

Laughter heals all ills. Sometimes when I feel overwhelmed in day to day things or hate being away from Ryan, I think about our funny moments and all is well again.

Frankies Day Date

We have been having a blast in NC, but of course, all things must come to an end. Ryan had to leave to go back to Louisiana for Army work. Before he left, we went on a fun day date. Man, its awesome to have grandparents who always want to babysit! :)

We decided to go to Frankies Fun Park and play some putt putt. Go figure, Ryan beat me. It's going to be my new life goal to beat him at putt putt! Haha. We then tried some hitting at the batting cages. Ryan and I both have played baseball/softball before, but we haven't played in forrrrrever!! It was super fun! I can't say that we were both pros at it, but we still have some of it. We totally want to join an adult league at some point. Maybe next summer!

We had a blast, just like always do on our dates. Sadly it will be another month or so before we go on another one. Our long distance family period starts now. Sigh... We've got this!

On a happier note - Blake is 6 months old today!!! I am gonna save all the updates on him until Monday...when he has his 6 month check up!

Baby, Dog, and a U-Haul

Ryan and I have been planning a HUGE move in our life! So, I guess we should officially share it on our blog. Where do we start??!

Ryan gets out of the Army (Active Duty) around January-ish. We have been thinking for a long long long time about where our family will go and what we will do when that happens. We agreed that we would pursue every opportunity in every direction...and then leave it up to prayer.

One of the opportunities I went after was my old English teaching job in NC. After a very back and forth journey, I landed the job! This was an answer to our prayers! It was the comfort that our family needed for the future. We will have a job and steady income...and be close to one side of the family! The only tricky part to it is that the job starts in August. Obviously I can't be in NC and LA at the same time, so WE decided that I (Along with Blake and Maggie) would go to NC early and prepare things for when Ryan joins us in January-ish.

Yes, it is extremly heartbreaking to think about our family be separated for a few months, but at the same time we know that this is what is best for our family. We are going to be set financially, we have a house that is ready for us to move into, and it has plenty of opportunities for Ryan's next step towards his occupational future.

Yes, it will be hard on all of us, however, we are an Army strong family. We have done long distance before and we will do it again. Although it will be expensive, we will be flying to see each other once a month. It is important for our family to be together when we can. We will still be raising Blake together, no distance will change that. Thank goodness for Skype during the rest of the time!

So, next week Ryan will help Blake and I move to NC! He will get us settled there, living with family. Then he will return to Louisiana to finish up his job here in Louisiana. In the meantime, I will be going back to teaching and Blake will be having a blast with other kids at an amazing sitter - Mrs. Dawn's house. When Ryan joins us for good then we will move into our house at the Pond - right beside where we got married. How perfect is that?!?!

This is just another step in the journey of our forever family. :)

July 4th

Happy 4th of July! Obviously being an Army family, this holiday has a special place in our heart. We think of this wonderful land that we live in. We think about the freedom that we are so blessed to have. And most importantly, we think about those who have faught and continue to fight for our Country.

Now, after all of that thinking, we also had the traditional fun too! :)

Ryan and I always try to take advantage of Blake's nap times. So, during his morning nap, we went outside in the backyward and played catch. Baseball...the great American sport! It had been a while since each of us had broken out the gloves, so we had lots of fun!

When Blake woke up, we decided to unbox our new icecream maker. It was a birthday gift to Ryan from my Dad and Heather. The wooden barrel was just the right size for little man to fit in. He LOVED it - even crying when I took him out. I guess we will be building lots of forts in the near future.

It was WAY too hot outside to go to the festivals around here, so we played and read books. That is one of Blake's favorite things to do. And of course, his English teacher mom is beaming with pride. :)

Ryan broke out the sparklers when the sun started to go down. Blake wasn't sure what to think about it. He liked looking at the fire but wasn't a fan of the rest. Maybe in a few more years.

There was a concert on post and fireworks, but we decided not to go because of the loud noises and late night. Not the best for a 5 month old. So, we made our own fun! When Blake went to sleep, we pulled the truck around to the back yard and piled pillows and blankets in it. Then we had a picnic and watched neighborhood fireworks. We were even able to see some beautiful stars. Plus it was very romantic ;) ....even with Maggie sitting underneath us the whole time. She isn't a fan of the loud noises! Haha.

Fathers Day

Ryan just celebrated his first Father's Day!! He got his gift a little early...a cover for the bed of his truck. What can we say?! He needed it for the rain! :)

So, for Father's Day, Blake and I wanted to make the day all about him! We began by letting him sleep until 8:00. For an Army man and a new dad, that is equal to sleeping until noon for many people. Haha. Then we fixed him his favorite breakfast casserole and relaxed! Ryan hasn't been bowling since before Blake was born, so I surprised him with a family trip to the bowling alley. It was great! Blake played and laughed in his stroller while he watched Ryan and I bowl 3 games! Don't worry, nothing has changed in Ryan's time away...he still beat me pretty bad. :)

Finally we ended the day with Skype time to both of our families. After Blake went to bed Ryan and I watched a movie and made brownies. Basically it was an amazing day for our little family.

Being a dad is a VERY important role in life. I know that Ryan and I have been raised by amazing fathers in our lives. In fact, I think we can agree that many of our life lessons have been taught by them. In addition, I am very grateful for not only my father figures, but for the father that Ryan has become. There is such joy in my heart to see that Blake has a dad that is so involved in his life. I can just see Ryan being so eager to play with Blake..to teach him about sports...to take him off roading...to let him help with the grill...all the fun boy stuff. I am so excited to see their relationship grow!

Happy Father's Day!

Happy Birthday, Daddy

Happy Birthday to you....

It's Ryan's 27th birthday and we are..... not together. :( As we have learned, sometimes the Army gets in the way of special days. Sadly for Ryan, the Army has gotten in the way of his birthday for the past 5 years. BUT, that will not stop us from celebrating! Before he left for this rotation we ate his birthday cake and he got his gift from Blake and I. We gave him a gift certificate to go get a 1 hour deep tissue/hot rock massage! Ryan has never had a real massage and he always talks about his body hurting from work, so we thought this would be a great way to reward him! Hopefully he will get some relaxation out of this too. He works so hard to support our family. He really deserves the best!

We love him to the moon and back. Ryan comes home on Sunday and we can't wait to celebrate with him more...and he gets some vacation time soon too! Yay!!

Army Love

First of all...Blake is 4 months old today! We will do his 4 month post after his doctors appointment on Monday. :)

Now...on to this Army love stuff. Blake, myself, and Maggie had to say goodbye to Ryan this morning. He will be doing a training rotation for the next 10 days which requires him to be away from us the whole time - no communication at all.

I thought that once we made it through his deployment and the long distance, while he was in Italy, that this whole Army thing would calm down. It hasn't...an Army kind of love is a special thing. It is always a challenge. It means that your family is separated a lot. It means that the Army controls your time. It means that you have to have lots of strength in your family to survive it.

You would think that Ryan and I would be pro's at this Army love, but we aren't. I still cry when he leaves for more than a day. He still gets stressed about leaving me (and now Blake). We both miss out on things such as birthdays, anniversaries, and holidays. Basically our plans are often ruined by the Army. To be honest, Ryan is always the strong one in this type of situation. I always hate stuff like this so much. However, no matter what the Army requires of us right now, I know that we are stronger because of it. We only have 7-10 months left of it. So I know that our love can remain Army strong until them. :)

This week we will miss Ryan a lot! We will miss his birthday (on the 5th) and he will miss Blake's doctors appointment. Little Blake and I are already counting down the days until next Sunday. We can't wait to have him back with us!! Until then, we will just keep doing what we do!

Romance and Car Washes

For some reason, our lives have gotten VERY busy lately. Yes, we have a 3 month old. Yes, Ryan's work with the Army has him away from home alot - making me feel like a single parent sometimes. Yes, Ryan is taking two college classes. Yes, I am managing the house by myself. And yes, we just adopted a  dog who is still very much a puppy. However, I love how we still make time for our relationship, even though those moments might be few and far between sometimes.

This past week has been really hard on each of us. I guess it followed the cliche "when it rains, it pours". Things just seemed to be way too difficult for each of us in our own ways. Ryan and I had both almost hit rock bottom with our every day challenges.

Thank goodness I married an amazing man...because Ryan brought us both back up to speed by surprising me with a date night! He got off work a little early (does the Army have a heart?!!) and told me to get ready because he was taking me to dinner. What about Blake!? Well, Ryan had already arranged for our family friends to babysit him for 2 hours. Yay! He took me to one of our favorite places, Hana - a Japanese Steakhouse! Yum and yum. Then we went to the car wash - the Jeep was just disgusting. The drive thru one was broken so we washed the car by hand - totally acting like little kids the whole time by slinging soap and spraying water. :)

Life will not be easy, but luckily we have learned in our very young marriage that we can support each other with our ebb and flow... and always pause things to have some time together!

Do the Dew Date

When I first found out I was pregnant, almost a year ago, I made the decision not to drink caffeine - mostly from my Mt. Dew obsession. I know that you can have small amounts of caffeine while pregnant, but I wanted to be as healthy as possible. In fact, I cut out sodas in general.

I started drinking sodas after Blake was born, but still no caffeine...until now. Blake is now 3 months old and I decided I was in the clear and could have one Mt.Dew every now and then!

Ryan and I went on our weekly date - just getting some Mexican food for Cinco de Mayo- and that is where it happened. I grabbed Ryan's Mt.Dew and had my first sip in over a year. (take a moment to savor it) It was fantastic. Ryan said it was more of a gulp than a sip. Haha. I just cant explain how happy my taste buds were. :) After all this time of watching others drink Mt. Dew and me restraining myself...it all paid off! Our date nights are always amazing, but the Mt.Dew totally made the night.

PS- Is it lame that we also went grocery shopping on our date night while we didn't have Blake with us?! We are totally turning into THOSE old people. Haha.
